Class 6 - Curriculum

Text

Class 6                              Autumn 2 half term 2006.

Where did the first 7 weeks disappear to? I know the children are now settled and getting to grips with what is expected of them in their final year before high school. I am pleased with the progress, enthusiasm and efforts being shown by all the class since September and hope these positive attitudes develop further as the year progresses.                    Go on Class 6 – Reach for the stars! You CAN do it!

English

Coverage in Literacy is very broad in year 6, to ensure reinforcement of all the various genres of writing are covered in depth. We will be creating stories with build-ups, which include tension to develop atmosphere and in-depth description in sentences. The Shakespeare play, MacBeth, will be used to write poetry, non-chronological reports, letters and explanatory texts will also be part of our cross-curricular writing links, to again focus on text features, use of language and development of sentence, spelling and punctuation work.  The spelling logs are proving beneficial to the children and I encourage them to practise spellings in the car, 5 minutes before bed, or anywhere else when they are sat daydreaming!  Supporting and encouraging your child to be successful, is the key to a good education.

Maths

A large part of this half term is spent focusing on aspects of shape, space and measures. We will be covering quadrilaterals and their properties, plotting co-ordinates in the different quadrants, angles, perimeters and areas; focusing on converting various measures into fraction and decimal notation. As always we shall be practising mental skills, reinforcing previously taught aspects of the curriculum from the first half term and of course those dreaded times tables.

Please continue the grind of the homework, it is solely beneficial to the children and I know in time you will recognise their progress in abundance.

Science

Animal habitats, how they adapt to their environment, food chains, plant growth and soil types are the main focus areas of our science work. Throughout the weeks the reinforcement of previously taught concepts will be included to further develop children’s understanding. A range of investigative tasks, experiments and research will be incorporated into activities, and children will be encouraged to use the appropriate vocabulary which can be included in write-ups and useful for tests.

Geography

In Geography the children will be studying countries of the wider world, which they can compare to their own locality of Huddersfield. Map skills, keys, comparisons, differences, industry, land uses, forms of transport used, physical and human features and research skills are amongst a few the children will be using to cover this topic. The cross-curricular links are endless; money converting, co-ordinates, distances, leaflets, graphs, religious festivals……… so if you have any information on places you’ve visited please could we borrow it and I promise to return it in one piece before the Christmas holiday.

Art

Art from around the world will be the starting point of our creative topic. Children will develop their knowledge of wider arts, use observational skills, focusing on perspective, lines, shapes, textures and colours. Research of art and artists from the chosen place the children wish to develop further knowledge about, will be part of the topic linked to ICT. Using sketches and research, the children can create their own designs, explore the styles of artists and experiment with various mediums to create textures to suit the style of art chosen.

ICT

The fabulous power point presentations the children produced on Tudor aspects of life from \last half term will be on the computer on the school website, to show off their amazing research and ICT skills for all to see. The main coverage of this unit will be how to locate information efficiently, using search tools and saving the best web sites to a favourites file. The children will need this skill to research specific aspects of the geography, R.E and science units being taught.

So get practising – what are you waiting for!

Music

The theme of contrasting sounds will be the unit of music covered through this half term. Children will listen and compare sounds from a variety of instruments, discussing textures produced and how they affect the piece of music. As the singing in school is of a high standard, children will continue learning new songs especially in the run-up to our festive celebrations.

R.E.

Year 6 are enjoying their sessions of RE with Andrea, who is making the input very interactive, using lots of discussion activities to develop ideas about Christians and the religion. The main topic for this half term is focusing on places of worship, in the build up to the festival of Christmas. We will also be researching other religions around the world, linked to our topic theme to broaden the children’s understanding and knowledge of the wider world.

P.E.

This half term on Tuesday mornings, the children will be participating in athletics with Andy Cook, a coach from the school sports partnership, who they have worked alongside previously in year 4. The children will experience a range of multi-skilled activities, to enhance their co-ordination, speed and agility.
