Class 1 - Curriculum

Welcome back to a new half term and the countdown to Christmas.  This is always a busy time with a lot going on including the preparations later in the term for our Christmas performance.  Along with Class R and Class 2, we will also be making Christmas Cakes which will be served with refreshments after the performance.  More details of this will follow nearer the time.  Our topic focus this term is on History, looking particularly at Castle buildings and investigating how people used to live in the distant past.  As part of this topic, I am organising a trip to Helmsley Castle.  This visit is always very successful, giving the children an opportunity to explore an ancient building

Buildings

Year One Autumn 2007

Language and Literacy

Using traditional tales as a starting point, the children will use drama and role play to compare story themes.  They will be thinking about how adjectives are used to describe characters and settings and will try to use some of these words when writing their own sentences.  Phonics and spelling work will focus on initial and final blends e.g., bl, cl, fr,

Numeracy

The children will be practising their skills in addition and subtraction, particularly counting on and counting back.  They will be introduced to the concept of odd and even numbers and will begin to work with two-digit numbers understanding the significance of each digit as tens and ones.  We will also be looking at 2D and 3D shape and pattern.

History/Science – Castles

The children will be making comparisons between castles and modern homes.  We will be looking at the materials used, the styles of the different buildings and the location.  We will also consider how our modern lifestyle compares with castle life using the inside of our homes and our modern comforts as a starting point.

Information Technology

The children will continue to develop their keyboard skills and mouse control.  Using word processing and drawing packages, they will select tools and functions to create specific effects.  They will learn how to open an existing document, edit and re-save their work.

Art and Design Technology

The children will be designing and building models of castles and churches.  They will develop and practise a variety of skills and will develop their understanding of both 2D and 3D shape.  We will also be designing and making Christmas cards, wrapping paper and decorations as we approach December.  In addition we will be making Christmas cakes and a variety of goodies linked to stories we will be reading.

P.E.

The children will be creating a firework-themed dance and practising for our Christmas performance.  In games the children will practise sending and receiving a ball and work with a partner.

R.E. – Worship and Prayer

Through discussion and a variety of activities, the children will learn about the significance of places of worship within the Christian and Muslim faiths.  In December the children will explore the reason for Christmas.
